Our program this week, given by Jovan Burton, Executive Director of the Partnership for Housing Affordability here in Richmond, was an eye-opening dive into the barriers and affordability of housing in 2025. Through his lens of expertise in the Richmond region, Burton outlined the stark differentials between mean income and the cost of housing, both for home ownership and rental properties. He enlightened us also on the underlying roots of the ongoing homelessness crisis, citing data pulled from our local population—and then offered insights into the efforts to address housing inequalities. He introduced us to several local organizations working toward affordable housing projects, such as the Henrico Affordable Housing Trust and Worth RVA, and concluded with an insightful and incisive explanation of how prioritizing housing would fuel economic development in the future.
It was a program as clarifying as it was informative, giving us a keen-eyed glimpse of the work going on beneath affordable housing developments, housing trusts and rental/property law.
